How I met the sphynx
Greetings!
My family and me are from Belarus. It happened so that I came to Greece to work under contract and having thought over some time I decided to remain in Greece. We have already been living here for 5 years. My family has always had different pets including cats.
They were different both thoroughbred and usual. However we gave preference to the dogs of large breeds, such as the Rottweiler till that moment when I got acquainted with sphynx. And I got acquainted with sphynx by chance although I heard about the cat's breed without hair long ago and I had been dreaming of it for a long time. Once I was on a visit to the Godmother of my child in Moscow. She was going to the poultry market and offered me to go with her. And I agreed. The market was large and Kate wanted to find some accessories for her dogs of the breed bullmastiff. So my traveling for sphynx began. Having arrived at the market I decided to visit the department where pets were sold. There were a lot of pets of different breeds and kinds. And suddenly I fixed my eyes on sphynx. Two completely bald kittens were sitting in the cage-terrarium. It was the first time I had seen the cat of my amazing breed.
I came up and asked to hold a kitten in my arms. I wasn’t refused. They disinfected my hands and then gave me the kitten. I was shocked that he was so hot! I had been holding him in my arms until Kate started to hurry me. I didn't want to part with sphynx and I made up my mind immediately – I wanted him. We walked around the market, bought everything we needed but the kitten didn’t get out of my mind. When we came home I switched on the computer and the search of the kitten started. All kittens were similar to me on the sites. I wrote out addresses and telephone numbers and then I made arrangements. We travelled around Moscow and saw a lot of kittens in the nurseries, then I started to distinguish them and they didn't seem similar to me. At last after long search my family and I decided in favour of one black kitten of show breed class. When he was brought for show he climbed on my knees, curled himself up into a ball and purred. It was decided to buy him. The preparation of documents started. So he moved to his new home in Belarus. He grew up very quickly because he ate and moved a lot. He stayed with my family at home but I went to Greece. He visited several cat-shows and received excellent results there. This summer (2006) he flew to Athens. I'm very glad that I’ve got such a wonderful cat. I enjoy being together with him and watching his behavior. All my friends were surprised by this wonder and his attitude to them. Now I will never change this breed for any other.
We've got a wonderful friend Aquarelle. She is my friend's cat (see the photo).
Now I'm in search of another cat (female) because I'm mad about sphynx. We are not a nursery yet, but we'll become it soon. Now I'm looking for a couple carefully and I have an eye to several females.
We'll have a new girlfriend and nice bald kittens soon.
I was completely conquered by the appearance of the sphynx when I saw him for the first time. It is unusual to see such representatives of the cat's family for the first time, but having permanent contact with this breed you understand and are imbued (inspired) with a peculiar character and behaviour of these unearthly creatures. Once having taken the sphynx on your hands, having felt a tender warm body of its naked skin, having looked into his big eyes, you won’t be able to forget him any more. Cats similar to the figurines have an amazing character and a magic appearance.
Naked cats are convenient in the maintenance, especially for those people who suffer from the wool (hair) allergy or for that people who wouldn’t like to spend their precious time on care of a cat with hair. It is an ideal variant. Weekly bathing (and Sphynxes like water very much), a cutting claws with special tweezers and ear cleaning – that’s all. These cats are excellent friends for children (and adults)!
History of the Canadian Sphynx
Throughout the domestication of the cat, hairless kittens have spontaneously appeared in Australia, France, Canada and the United States. Around the turn of the 20th century, there were two hairless cats owned by Mr. J. Schinck in New Mexico. He had acquired the cats from local Indians.Although there seems to have been some interest in these cats, no recorded breedings have been found. Then in 1938, geneticist Professor R. Letard reported two hairless kittens born to two Siamese cats in Paris, France. Twelve years later in 1950, a Siamese litter of nine kittens was born, of which three kittens were hairless. When these cats were interbred, three more hairless kittens were produced, but no further information is available on breedings using these hairless cats.
